James Talarico: Redistricting Strips Diverse Communities of their Voices

Transcript:

Texas is a very diverse state. Um, you

0:02

know, it's what makes Texas so great.

0:04

Always has been. We're this big mashup

0:05

of all these different people and

0:07

cultures. It's why we have some of the

0:09

best food and the best music, right? The

0:11

best culture.

0:12

Um, and it's why I love my state so

0:14

much. But that is a threat to some folks

0:16

who are in power um who don't want to

0:18

see this these rising um, you know,

0:21

black and brown communities um, starting

0:24

to exert their influence in the

0:25

political process. And so I I mentioned

0:27

that grabbing these five seats is the is

0:29

the goal. That's the what.

0:31

We should talk about the how though. The

0:33

how they do that is by intentionally

0:36

dividing communities of color,

0:38

black and brown communities in Texas to

0:40

dilute their their voting power. Right.

0:42

There's there's a um a historic uh

0:45

Latino neighborhood in Houston, Texas

0:48

that it's a pretty big neighborhood. So

0:50

when it's in a congressional district,

0:51

it can pick the representative of their

0:53

choice. They may not pick a Latino rep,

0:55

right? They may pick a a black

0:57

representative, a white representative,

0:59

um, Asian-American representative, but

1:01

they get to pick as a as a community.

1:04

But now this new map divides that

1:06

community in half and then takes both

1:08

halves and draws them into white rural

1:10

areas

1:11

which now have a bigger say. So you've

1:13

you've watered down their voting power.

1:16

You've intentionally um cracked their

1:19

their um influence in the democratic

1:22

process. So, these maps are are deeply

1:25

racist and it's something that, you

1:27

know, all of us learned about in the

1:28

20th century.

1:30

I'm not sure if everybody realizes it's

1:31

still happening in 2025. Um, and it's

1:34

something again we should all reject uh

1:36

because it's deeply unamerican.
